How to enjoy the beaches of Rio de Janeiro without tourists

With some injustice, it has been the beach of Copacabana as one of the worst in the world. But not by its waters – crystalline-or its white sands, but by the multitudes that invade it every summer. But not to discourage visitors, Rio de Janeiro offers, not far from its center, several beaches of bays and coves recommended for those who seek to tan without fear of being trampled by a legion of tourists. A trip to one of these five beaches will provide a less classic concept of the Carioca lifestyle, as well as being able to enjoy the natural wealth that Rio has to offer.

Barra da Tijuca

Barra de Tijuca gained great popularity as the place where the Olympic village of the Games was erected in 2016. However, this neighborhood west of Rio should enjoy more fame thanks to its large beach. In its almost 20 kilometer of extension, Barra Beach is a space for all audiences, from dog walkers and yoga practitioners, to kitesurfers and windsurfers. The beach bars serve all kinds of snacks, fruits and cocktails of great quality; And even some rent equipment for the practice of different sports.

Vermelha Beach

When you climb up to the top of the sugar loaf you can spot one of the most enchanting beaches in Rio. of reddish-coloured sand, this small cove is reached in just 25 minutes from the city centre. Praia Vermelha is sheltered by the sugar loaf on one side and by a series of steep cliffs on the other. The beach is not stuffed of people and from there you have one of the best views of Rio and its sister city, Niterói. In Praia Vermelha you can rent surfboards and kayaks.

Joatinga Beach

Located between the beaches of São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca, Joatinga is perhaps one of the favorite places to make plans on weekends in Rio. The road that leads to this cove is not signposted, which makes it an almost isolated site and far from the reach of tourists Joatinga is also one of the most scenic places in the city, in its waters it is possible to observe local surfers, and in its sand field you can see the people who play football.

Grumari Beach

A little farther away from the hustle and bustle of the city lies Grumari. On this beach there are only a few bars standing, and it is bordered by green thickets that merge with the Jungle Mata Atlântica. If you delve into this jungle, some winding roads can drive you to other even more remote and pristine beaches.

La Beach

Almost an hour and a half away by car, there is a set of beaches within a protected natural area. A place where the sand of the sea is also fused with the lush vegetation that surrounds the river. Praihna (Portugese name) is about 610 meters long and its waves attract surfers every weekend, as well as families and groups of friends who will enjoy improvised meals in the area on sunny days. Highly recommended the fresh fish and seafood from the local beach bars.
